Dr. Marvin Chiles
Assistant Professor, History, Old Dominion University
Marvin T. Chiles has been the Assistant Professor of African American History at ODU since 2020. His research and teaching specialties are in black, Southern, and sports history in 19th and 20th century America. Chiles has served on several projects within various departments at ODU. He has also been a consultant and invited speaker for private institutions such as Randolph-Macon College, the University of Richmond, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, League of Women Voters, Genworth Financial, and Black History and Cultural Center of Virginia, and public institutions such as George Mason University, James Madison University, the University of Georgia, Pacific Oaks College in California, Virginia Humanities, the Virginia Department of Education, PBS, National Endowment of the Humanities, and the U.S. Department of the Navy. An award-winning historian and author of several journal articles, Chiles' first book titled The Struggle to Change was released in December 2023 by the University of Virginia. His next book Bygone World of Sport will debut with the University of Alabama in 2025.
